Have a question, found a bug, or want to suggest a feature? Email us and we'll get back to you as soon as we can, usually within two business days.

To help us help you, please include your device model, iOS or iPadOS version, the Data Diary version (shown in iOS Settings › General › iPhone Storage › Data Diary), and the steps that led to the problem. Please don't send private diary entries or notes — we never need your personal data to help.

Frequently asked questions

Getting started

How do I start tracking something?

Open the Record tab. If you don't have any metrics yet, Data Diary opens Metric Templates for you. Tap Add on as many templates as you like, then go back to Record and start logging. You can also open templates from Home by tapping Decide What Matters.

How do I create my own metric?

On the Record tab, tap Setup, then tap +. Give the metric a name and a description, set its minimum and maximum, choose whether it allows decimals, and pick how each day is combined: Sum for counts and durations, or Average for ratings and levels. Tap Save.

Can I change the order of my metrics?

Yes. In Setup Metrics, touch and hold a metric's reorder handle, then drag it to a new position. Record and Analytics follow the same order.

Recording

How do I add a note to an entry?

On a metric card in Record, tap Add note…, type your note, and then record the value. You can also add or edit a note later from All Data.

I made a mistake or forgot to log something. Can I fix it?

Yes. Open All Data, tap a day, then tap an entry to change its value, time, or note, or to delete it. To add a missed entry, tap + in All Data or on a day's page.

How do I open Record with the Action Button or Back Tap?

On Home, tap Setup Instant Capture and choose an option. Data Diary creates or reuses a Record shortcut; then finish assigning it in iOS Settings (Action Button, or Accessibility › Touch › Back Tap). Opening Record this way never saves an entry automatically. Action Button and Back Tap availability depends on your iPhone model.

How do reminders work?

In Setup, tap Remind me…, then +. Choose a message, the metrics it covers, the days of the week, and a time. You can also tell Data Diary to skip the reminder if you've already entered those metrics within a set number of minutes. Make sure notifications are allowed for Data Diary in iOS Settings.

Location

Why does Data Diary ask for my location?

Location is optional. If you allow it, each entry records the street and city where it was made, so Analytics can show whether a metric tends to differ between places. If you decline, everything else works normally. You can change this any time in iOS Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services › Data Diary.

Can I call an address "Home" or "Work"?

Yes. Open any entry in All Data, tap Location Alias…, choose an address, and give the place a familiar name. The name replaces the address throughout your diary and exports.

Analytics

Why don't I see any observations yet?

Most analyses need enough history to be meaningful — typically at least 20 recorded days within the window being examined, and more for cycles and correlations. Keep recording regularly and observations will appear on Analytics and under "Look at this…" on Home.

What do the observations mean? Are they medical advice?

Observations are exploratory statistics about your own recordings — trends, repeating cycles, changes in variability, unusual readings, location differences, and correlations between metrics. They are not medical advice and do not prove cause and effect. The Statistical Methodology page, linked from Home, explains every method and its limits. Talk with a qualified professional about health decisions.

How do I compare two metrics?

On Analytics, tap a metric to open its detail chart, then turn on any metrics under Compare metrics. Each comparison is plotted on its own range so they're easy to read together.

Your data

How do I share my data with my doctor or coach?

Go to All Data and tap Export. Choose the date range and metrics, decide whether to include notes and locations, then tap Share and pick Mail, Messages, Files, AirDrop, or another app. The export is a tab-delimited text file that opens in Numbers, Excel, or Google Sheets.

Is my data backed up? How do I move it to a new iPhone?

Data Diary has no account or cloud service — your data lives only on your device. It is included in your regular iCloud or computer device backups, so restoring a new device from a backup brings your diary with it. Deleting the app deletes its data unless it was preserved in a device backup.

How do I erase everything and start over?

On Home, tap Delete Everything… and confirm twice. This permanently removes all entries, metrics, notes, location aliases, reminders, and cached export files. It cannot be undone, and it does not remove copies you've already shared or device backups.

Do you collect or see my data?

No. Your diary stays on your device. See the Privacy Policy for full details, including the optional location lookup and Apple-provided crash diagnostics.
